Frontier grows scalable biological brains as an ML training substrate

Frontier grows large-scale biological neural networks as compute substrates for ML training. They've solved the scaling limits that previously restricted academic systems to ~1 million neurons, building toward 500M neuron clusters by January 2027. Their approach colocates memory with compute in biological tissue, avoiding GPU memory bandwidth constraints and enabling training of larger parameter count models at lower cost. They've demonstrated their system's computational capacity by training cultured neurons to play Frogger using RL, achieving 92% peak performance with just 1 hour of real-time learning.
